Total Value Locked in DeFi

Total value locked, or TVL, estimates the value of assets deposited in selected smart contracts or protocols.

How to interpret it

TVL can change because deposits move, asset prices change, or the provider changes its coverage. It is not revenue, liquidity, solvency, or a complete measure of protocol adoption.

Research context

Compare like-for-like methodology and avoid adding duplicated assets across nested protocols or chains.

Data quality matters

Any current figure should identify its source, timestamp, coverage, and calculation method. This educational page does not present live market or protocol data.

Research checklist

  • Included contracts and chains
  • Asset pricing method
  • Double-counting policy
  • Timestamp and historical revisions

Questions and answers

What should I verify when researching total value locked in defi?

Check the definition, source, timestamp, coverage, and methodology. Separate reported data from interpretation and avoid treating one metric as an investment conclusion.
